    When first in my youth I went cutting the land
    With brógs on my feet and a spade in my hand
    Says I to myself what a pity to see
    Such a dashing young fellow cutting turf in Tralee

    I buttered by brógs and shook hands to my spade
    And went to the fair like a dashing young blade
    Up came the Sergeant, he asked me to list
    Yera Sergeant a gráh put the bob in my fist.

    With a bright strap of leather to tigh around me throat
    He gave me a quare thing I asked what was that
    He said that it was a cockade for my hat.
