  1. Mr Lundie says that some of the landlords around Carrickmacross offered inducements to their farmers to improve their methods of farming. Prizes were given for the best crops. An instructor was sent round to teach farmers improved methods. In some cases if a farmer wanted to slate his house the landlord bore half the expense. On Skleagh estate at one time the landlord roofed the dwelling house with slates if the tenants raised the walls two storeys high. He also gave iron gates to put along the roads if the tenant built the piers. The Skleagh land lord sometimes gave free lime for manure.
