  1. On the teams long ago there used be 21 men on each side. "Bows' the goals were called + there were also two point poles. It was a custom to have the lines men on horseback.
    On 3rd May 1863 there was a great match between Blackwater (this parish) and Killisk on the slob. William Scallan of Ballyvaloo + Matt Brennan of Kilnew Blackwater were the linesmen + were armed with clubs. The following men hurled that day :-
    Mogue Shiggins, Bill McGuinness
    John Sheil, Thomas Bolger.
    A local poet wrote the foll rhyme :-
    his name was Ned Reilly of Castle ellis.
    On the 3rd May in the year '63
    To my satisfaction great sport I did see
    The hurlers from Killisk we did overthrow
    On the mud lands of Wexford and valour did show
    Pat Kehoe, Cowman, he had a pleasant day
    Three Briens + Mogue Shiggins supported the play
    And brave Bill McGuinness, the pride of my song
    I hope you'll excuse me if I have said wrong
    John Sheil, Thomas Bolger + Anthony Roche
    Caused Killisk for to tremble when they did approach
    And brave Thom. Sinnott who drove on the bow
    In the presence of thousands John Roche he laid low
