  1. There was a hedge school in the New Road Ennistymon about a hundred years ago. The school was taught by Paddy Kelleher who received no pay. The school house was a very small cabin and the boys brought their own turn to light the fire. There were no seats in the school and all the boys sat on the floor. They had no books nor paper.; they did all their work on slates.
There was another school in Caherus [?] just outside Miltown Malbay Co. Clare. The tenants were compelled to send their children to the school. the teachers were all Protestants and the children never heard a word about the Catholic religion.
