- There was a great famine in Ireland in 1847, causing poverty and a lot of deaths. All of the crops failed and the potatoes were affected with the blight. It lasted for two years during which time the population decreased by half. All the good potatoes were exported to Great Britain to make some money for the people's upkeep. the people were found dead along the roadside and were wrapped in sheets and buried in the fields and gardens. Several of the people crossed to America and earned their living there.I got this information from Mrs Driscoll
