  1. Connor Collins was a herd and cow-boy for Major Ball of Fortfergus house.
He was noted for his strength and prowess as a hurler and jumper (hop step and jump).
On one occasion his master, Major Ball, or his father met some others of the landed gentry in Ennis.
In the course of conversation a hurling match, which was to be held at Rhinanna, came up for discussion and Mr Ball was asked if he knew of any good hurler in his place.
He said he had a workman who was famous at the game.
He was asked if he would send him across the Fergus Estuary in a boat to take part in the game.
    He promised he would.
That night - Saturday night - he, on arriving home, told Connor about the match next day and how he promised on his word of honour that he would oblige by sending Conor to take part in the game.
