- Long ago the people in the surrounding district used no lamps for showing light The candles which made were unlike the ones we have at present. They were made mostly from rushes. These being brought from the bog and dried. When cows or calves were killed the fat was kept and this was used for candlemaking. The fat was heated and made into moulds. The rushes were twisted and sunk into moulds and rolled out untill a long candle was made from it.Other people made similar candles. A sod of turf with a hole in the middle. A mould of fat was poured into this hole, and while still hot a wick made form flax was put into it. When the fat was cold the sod of turf was used as a candle-stick. A woman named Kit Kearney who lived in Rusheen never used.Basket making was carried on to a great extent in this district, the baskets were made from rushes also. After being brought from the bog they were dried and left by for some time. The rushes were twisted and plaited together and after long hard work a basket was made from them. Other baskets were made from the Sally tree which was the most popular.
