  1. Long ago in the penal days mass was said either in the open air or in special places where a spy would have to keep a watch on the soldiers. A high price was awarded for the person who would capture a priest. If the people attending mass were caught by the soldiers they were either put to death or punished severely. Mass was generally said on Mass rocks in this district.
    On the bank of Loughgur lake a large mass was celebrated long ago.
