  1. Once upon a time there lived in Ballynoe a man who was a very bad drunkard. All the priests of the parish made many attempts to convert him, and make him take the Pledge, but all their efforts were in vain.
    At last the drunkard nearly ruined himself by drinking.
    One night he went to Confession, and he was so annoyed by their constant endeavours to make him stop drinking, that at last he consented to take the Pledge.
    The priest told him that if ever he wanted anything he was to pray to our Blessed Lady for it and he would surely get it.
    When the man came out of the Confessional, he began to feel sorry that he consented to take the Pledge, so he said to himself that he would have one good drink to finish drinking, but he found that he had no money.
