  2. Marriage took place during the Shrove from Small Christmas to Ash Wednesday. The unlucky days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and the *lucky days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The match-making always took place in a public house. When they had the marriage arrangements completed there was a night appointed for the young man and his friends to go to the house of his supposed wife to see her for the first time. These festivities were commonly called "Eating the Gander". In those days
