    throw out ashes on New Year's morning because it is said you would be throwing out your luck for the year. Irons were put into the fire while the people were churning so that they would have their neighbour's butter as well as their own. A stick taken out of one of the fires on St John's night and carried into a house would bring luck into that house for the year.
