- Clothes were dyed with alum and the bark of an oak tree. The oak was boiled and the alum melted in the boil. Then the garments were steeped in it.
Michael Cronin, father of Connie "the tins" lived near Kiskeam. He made quarts, "ponnys", gallons and buckets. He also made soldiers. He put bottoms into tanks. He has a prize taken each year for soldering.
- The people dyed clothes with log-wood and when dyed they were of a navy-blue colour. With the log-wood alum was also used as was also coprice.
Weeds were also used. Grass and weeds were boiled with the clothes.
