  1. (continued from previous page)
Early! Early as the eastern dawn
Ere sol assumed to illume your spangled lawn.
Once more by Mars I was Marillines hurdled,
A wandering out Cast in this narrow world.
I was teaching the pupils to survey the plain
To cast a plumb to plough the distant main
To Scan Great Newton's works and Nature's laws
Any by the effect produce the hidden cause
Credit no slanders or circumventing tales
    Against my former credit railed
For its well known by my assiduous care
That the pane of Glass was never broken there
Till the Northeren rough Militia came
And wrecked the sash of the window frame.
How can I hinder people of the line
Or am I to suffer a fault not mine
My little pupils were dispersed away
Like bees without a hive in a stormy Winter's day.
Or in the town can I find the meanest shed
From wintry blasts to hide my shrinking head
I hope your honour will disarm
And quell the envy of this false alarm.
May you long enjoy and your wealth increase
In virtue prosperity dignity and Grace,
Until an ant embibes the unboundless seas.
To which John Collins humbly prays.
