  1. Ploughs are used to prepare the ground for the potato crop when they are set in drills. A spade is used when the potatoes are set in ridges. Wooden ploughs are not in use now. Spades are not made in the homes they are got from McMahon's factory Clones. The neighbours help each other at all the seasonal occupations but more so at the potato setting.
    During the Summer months the farmer hoes, grubs and moulds the potatoes twice. this is necessary to prevent weeds choking the young
