  1. Few people in this district remember the famine. But I have heard old people tell stories about the famine times in Edraguil and around. These stories they heard from their parents. Stories of 1847 and of the years following when the potato crop failed and famine and cholera wasted all before them have been told and retold by many Irish firesides at home and abroad. The flight of those who could leave the desolate and afflicted country, the death of thousands at home from hunger and disease, the fate that befell thousands more on the seas in the coffin ships of those days will ever be remembered in Ireland.
