straw and go to the house of the wedding, and some of the people give them drink and others does not. The 13th of any month is unlucky to get married. The month of May is very unlucky to get married. The people used to give them cattle, or sheep, or money, for their fortunes.
All the marriages occured in Shrove, which is from January 1st to Ash-Wednesday. The unlucky time for marriages is in Lent. There are matches made in the district yet. There is money given to the people presently, and if they have no money they give cattle for their fortunes. Long ago the people used to have a great feast on the wedding day in the girl's house. Then the straw boys would come to the house, they would play all sorts of music, and they would make the bride and bride-groom dance. Some people would let them into their houses, and other people would hunt them. They would say to the people that wouldn't let them in wait until we catch ye back in Mayo. The bride and bride-groom would come home from the church on a side-car, and the other people that would be at the wedding would have a strive to see which of them would be home first, and the first one home would get whiskey.
