    Flags and earth were kinds of floors in the houses of long ago. Half doors were more common in olden times than they are now. Rush candles dipped in grease served as light. These were held by what was called a sconce which caught the rush. An article with a grip like a pincers and held ti till the rush was burned out and was replaced by another.
