to form a wick. This was dipped into the grease, and when cool dipped again until the required thickness, when it was ready for use. These candles could be purchased in shops later for a halfpenny, and were called "halfpenny dip-candles". Rushes, got in bogs and swampy places also gave light. It was placed in the "sconce" which was like a tin bracket, and in which was a ring of tin to hold the candle. Another means of night light was a small jar or bottle. This was filled with oil, and a tin lid affixed thro' which was pierced a hole for a wick to pass through. No globe was used at all, so it often smoked, and a white wall was seldom seen.
