  1. Uses of Herbs
`1. (a) Ivy-leaf cured coughs. Ivy was found growing on a wall with lime. To a pot of ivy-leaves a half-pot of water was added. It was boiled down to half the amount. This was then strained, and liquorice, sugar-candy, and a glass of whiskey added. This was a great cure for colds.
    (b) Ivy-Leavy was also a remedy for drawing water from flesh. It was put on as a bandage.
Nettles were used as a cure for Rheumatism by placing them between two sheets.
    Chicken-weed for a poultice.
Allderberry made wine which was good for many ailments and diseases.
A yellow flower (which grows with a leave like cabbage) was dried and smoked as a cure for Consumption.
