- (continued from previous page)The Kilconnell fairs are held in a field beside the town and it is called the fair-green. Mr. Jones is the owner of the field. Any person who sells a beast pays money called Custom money on each head sold. When some beasts are sold they are marked with raddle, pigs are ear-marked with a pen-knife. When a man is selling a beast he asks more money than he intends to get and the man that is buying bids less than he intends to give and then they divide what is between them.Animals sold a fairs are marked with mud instead of a raddle. The mark is made on the rump. The fair green in Ahascragh is owned by Mr. Michael Brennan who kept a posting establishment in the olden days. The fair green in Ballinasloe is owned by the Clancarty Estate and let on the eleven months plan.
