  1. 1. Long ago things were cheaper than they are now. People bartered goods long ago. The shops used be opened after mass on Sunday and goods were purchased. The goods sold were things for the house. Sometimes men gave a load of turf or turnips for goods. Some of them gave boot, which means giving money with their own goods to make a fair bargain.

    Small shops were common through the country (of value) but they sold nothing of value. Goods were bartered frequently for loads of turf or turnips, sometimes labour was given. There was always a market in Mountbellew. Tom Gillian was a dealer in rags and feathers. There used be "cheap jacks" in the market. They used have secondhand.
