- Long ago farmer's wives used to have a lot of work to do as there is a lot of labour scalding the churn with boiling water. They used churn the cream twice a week to have the butter nice and sweet. The churn should be rinsed with cold water and then the cream would be put into the barrel. Then the barrel would be closed after five minutes the air must be left out of the barrel. It is easy to know when the butter is made. The churn barrel gets heavy. Two persons twist the churn if they have a lot of cream in it.
