Long ago people used to grind the wheat with a grinding stone. The grinding stone is a round stone twisted around with a wheel. They used to make griddle cakes with a griddle which is a round pan laid up on a brand. They used also make pan-cakes and hot-cross-buns on Shrove Tuesday night. There also put a cross on the cakes to have it bake well. There was a mill in Glenlickey but it was closed down on account of the stoppage of wheat growing in the country. There is a mill in Killeagh about fourteen miles from this parish. They make cakes in the house yet but they have different things for baking compared with long ago. They have ranges and oil stoves and a gas cooker for cooking now-a-days. They also have bastables which are mostly used in the country.
