- Marriages take place most frequently in this district before Shrove and after Easter. Marriages do not take place on Shrove Tuesday. The days thought unlucky for marriage are Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The month thought unlucky is May. There are not any local beliefs or customs connected with Shrove. The old rhyme about marriage days is Monday for health, Tuesday for wealth, Wedensday the best day of all, Thursday for losses, Friday for crosses and Saturday there is no luck at all." There are matches made in the district. Money is given as a dowry. Sometimes stock or goods are given. People do not remember marriages ever taking place in the houses.
