1. The Potato Crop

   The potato crop is the chief crop grown on our farm at home. About half of our crop grown at home is potatoes and nearly always about the quarter or the half of the crop grown about our district is potatoes.
   The farmer himself chiefly prepares the ground for the potatoes. Some farmers manure the ground which they call "top-dressing" in November and some of them plough down manure or on bare heights if they happen to have trenches cleaned out they spread soil on them. Potatoes are chiefly sown in drills but in vegetable gardens early potatoes are grown in ridges. First he cultivates it and next it is harrowed. Then he opens the drills with a drill-plough. Wooden ploughs were used long ago to dig out the potatoes and spades were also used. The spades in my district are bought in the shop. Before the farmer sows the potatoes he puts them in boxes to sprout. Then my mother cuts the seed.
