There was a man by the name of OKeefe. He lived between Clonakilty and Rosscarbery...

    (continued from previous page)
He made great haste to see him about the mare. At that time there lived a very holy priest named Father Madden. He was loved by rich and poor, but a that time some of the Protestant hated the priests. When the Keefe man called in Shields he asked him for a cure, and he said he was badly off and couldn't afford the loss of the mare. Shields told him he knew nothing about horses himself, but he would recommend him to a very good farrier by the name of Marcus O Maidín. Keefe went off without delay and enquired for Marcus O Maidín and was directed to the priest's house. He went in and met the priest. He asked if there was a farrier here who could cure his mare. The priest had pity on him when he saw him so troubled, and he told him go home and his mare would be alright. "When you are going home" said he "tell Shields look after his own horses"
When he went home his mare was alright. When Shields went out to see his own horses before going to bed he found his two stud horses dead there in their stables. "
