- Long ago the walls of the houses were made of mud and the roof was made of bog deal.
The chimney was made of mud and thatched outside on some houses. Other houses had chimneys made of boards and thatches outside.
The beds were in the kitchen. They were low beds made of timber cover or canopy going out over the persons head.
They had pieces of bog deal lighting on the hobs to give light at night.
There was one window and one door. The window was a hole in the wall which they stuffed with hay at night and left open by day. The door was made of rough timber. They also had half doors to keep out the hens and to keep in the children. They burned sticks with the turf to make the fire.
