The cow house is called a "Byer", the floor is made of cement of a rough finish to prevent the cows from slipping, the walls are lime washed, iron or wooden pillars are erected opposite to where each cow stands, on this pillar a round hoop of iron hangs, and to it an iron chain is fastened about four feet long, this chain allows the cow to move her head up and down as she requires, in front of the cow a "manger" is arranged, in which hay, straw or other feeding stuff is placed.
When a cow kicks at milking time, tyings or "langles" are placed on her legs; when a cow is being led to the market a "halter" made from hemp is placed around her head.
Elder or Bourtree branches were hung over cows for luck in by-gone-years.
