  1. The beautiful lake of Lough Lene is situated about a quarter mile from the village of Collinstown (and) and a mile from Castlepollard. Lovely sloping wooded shores gives it the title of one of the prettiest lakes in the midlands. It contains three islands on which wild fowl are found in plenty and is much resorted by sportsmen as the shooting is capital. For all its lovely appearance Lough Lene is known in the district for its sudden storms and many a fisherman pushed off his boat into glass calm waters and in less than 15 minutes found himself pulling for his life against waves mountains high.
    Amongst the many gunmen who went to the island was a celebrated poacher Thomas Farrell, who went almost nightly to the island to shoot wild fowl or catch trout. Tom said he did not care a jot about storms as he
