- (continued from previous page)always knew when one was coming. He was lucky for years, but one night as he was leaving Castle island a storm suddenly started.
Tom, well skilled in the managing of a boat, at first was not worried, but he soon saw that he had no control of his boat. He still plied his oars using every ounce of strength he possessed and he was about two furlongs away from the island when "snap" went one oar straight across in the rowlock throwing him flat in the bottom of the boat. When he fell he lost the other oar and was completely at the mercy of the wind. Without his oar he could not make for any point.
For half an hour he was tossed this way and that and expected every minute to be his last because he could not swim a stroke. He was always accompanied by a large retriever dog named Carlo who was as clever at the poaching business as his master. At last the boat(continues on next page)- Collector
