  1. The mournful procession following the remains of a relative, friend, or neighbour to the last resting place of the deceased varies in dimensions according to the popularity of the bereaved family or the esteem in which the deceased was held.
    Funerals to-day differ somewhat from those of former years particularly in regard to transport. The two horse hearse for any distance beyond a few miles being replaced by a motor-hearse. The old customs still prevail regarding respect for the dead. If a pedestrian meets a funeral he raises his hat and returns for a short distance with the procession.
    Motorists too pull up, and remain with engine silenced, until the funeral passes. A horse-drawn vehicle is turned to the opposite direction from which it was travelling.
