- Local ForgesThere are six forges in this parish. Two of these forges belong to Mr. Meara, one to Mr. Bouchier, another to Mr. Lane, another to Mr. Brereton and another to Mr. Delahunty.Two of these forges are in Lorrha, one in Ballymacegan, one in Killeen, another at the Pike of Rathcabbin and another in Clonmona.Mr. Delahunty's forge is roofed with tiles, Mr. Brereton's with inc, Mr. Bouchier's with timber and the remaining three are thatched. The smiths shoe horses and asses. The forge fire is made of coal. The implements used are, an anvil, hammer, sledge, pincers, puffer, punch, knife, rasp, vice, nails and iron.There is a white powder called borax used in welding iron.There is a white powder called borax used in welding iron.
