   A Retrospection

   'Twas ev'ning, in the month of May;
   Charm'd by the tranquil scene,
   I wander'd thro' yon shady wood,
   Beneath the leaves so green:
   The cuckoo cried, the woodquest coo'd
   The thrush sang his sweetest song,
   The blackbird too, gave forth his strain
   To help the feather'd throng.

   And so I wander'd up and down
   To where? I could not tell,
   A solemn sound came to my ears,
   It was the Vesper's Bell.
   When tir'd of wand'ring, I sat down,
   All natures gifts to woo,
   And sitting there, I thought I'd take
   A retrospective view.
