In gardens spraying is done by means of a small machine carried on the back and worked by the hands. It is called a "Knapsack". The merchants who sell the spraying requisites usually keep one and lent it to their customers. Most farmers in the district spray once, others twice and one or two farmes, Mr. Gahan, and Mr. Hayden always spray three times, and they always say it pays them well, as they usually have an abundant crop of potatoes. If soft, gloomy moist weather comes in the end of June or beginning of July people are very much afraid of the blight. This kind of weather at this particular time of the year favours blight. Lightning too causes it. Some old farmers say they can smell the blight such evenings.
