The boys of the district are always making snares of wire with which to catch rabbits - now that rabbits have become almost a pest. They get six strands of wire and form it into a running loop at one end. They are set in a hole or passway The rabbit's head goes through and the loop tightens, and there he has to stay.
Turnips were often used in olden times as candle-sticks. A hole was scooped out in the centre, and the candle was set on it. The Xmas candle was usually set on it because it would be next to impossible to find a candlestick large enough to hold a lb. or ½ lb. candle. The turnip was nicely decorated with brightly coloured papers cut in strips, and ornamented.
