- There was a storm this year on the night of October the third and those who were listening to it through the long hours of the night thought it was terrible, though it must seem just as a breeze when compared with the big wind of 1839.The big wind lasted one night and one day. Ricks of hay and stacks of oats were lifted up and blown about, many ricks of turf also were knocked and scattered about. Some people had to go out and sit on the roofs of their houses to prevent the thatch from being blown off. It was said that the spray from the sea was blown as far as this place, more than twenty miles.A man who arrived at Strokestown on the evening before the big wind, discovered that he had forgotten some papers which he would need next morning. He started to walk back to Cootehall from whence he had come to recover the papers.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
