Local Marriage Customs.
Marriages take place usually before Lent,mostly on Shrove Tuesday.Marriages usually take place in the early day of the week,Thursday and Saturday are said to be unlucky,and the month of May.
There is an old custom on Shrove Tuesday of playing the following trick on children.Parents send their children to a neighbour's house for the loan of 'the pancake sieve'.The neighbour knowing the trick tells the children that the sieve is lent to another neighbour and so on until the children get tired of going from house to house and at last discover the whole thing is a joke.
Matches are not made in this district.Money is given to the bride as dowry.In this district people do not remember marriages taking place in the houses.There is usually a feast held in the bride's house on the wedding day.Goods or stock were not given to the bride.
Around this district straw-boys visit the house.They take the straw from the farms around and tie it around themselves.They go to the house where the wedding is held.They ask for money and if it is(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
