- In former times there were great hurling. There was a burling match played in Cullen (Millstreet, Co Cork) between Cullen and Rathmore (Kerry). The Cullen boys won the game. A large crowd watched the game being played. The ball was made of strong lether and packed inside with curled hair and corks. The hurleys were got out of furze bushes, and shaped and pared nicely. There was also a referee on horseback.
