Shrove is the time of the year in which people get married in this district. In olden times May was rather an unlucky month for people to get married.
Shrove begins early in January and ends on Shrove Tuesday.
The people arrange a meeting before they get married, and if the boy has the land, the girl must take a fortune to him and if the girl has the land, the boy must take a fortune to her.
In olden times the people used to get married in houses. The young boys dress in straw and go "straying" to the house of the wedding. In older times the man and his wife used to go to the chapel on horse-back.
