- There are only nineteen houses in my townland, and 50 years ago there were twenty two. There were only two slate houses at that time, the rest were all thatched. The thatch was made of straw and the slate was got at Valentia. In those days nearly all the houses had a bed in the kitchen, and it was placed in the far off corner from the fireplace. The fireplace was always at the gable wall, and the chimney was made of clay and wattles. The floor was made of mud, and there were half-doors in every house. Turf was used very much for fire and bogdeal splinters for light.
