- We have no churn at home but my father told me that there was one there in olden times. It was about three feet in height and was round at the sides. The various parts are called the churn and the churn-staff. The butter was made twice a week in the Summer and once a week in the Winter. There is water put in when it is going to break to cool the cream. When the milk begins to rattle in the churn the butter is made. Then the milk is let out. The butter is taken out with two butter-spades, and the milk squeezed out of it. The milk is used for making bread and for drinking. When strangers come in during the churning they help at making the churn. It is said that they would carry the butter with them if they did not.
