- Bonfires are usually lighted in honour of some event or to celebrate some victory gained. The bonfire in the ordinary sense lighted on the twenty third of June is locally said to be in honour of St. John. It is usually composed of blocks of wood and turf built into a big heap or pile, generally at a crossroads, a junction or some prominent place to which the youngsters generally gather. Music and dance usually follow after the fire is well ablaze. Great enjoyment and mirth seems to prevail and in many cases picnic feasting add considerably to the enjoyment of this annual nocturnal social.Sometimes, superstitions about it is, that the old men when leaving about 10 o'clock each bring with them a lighted turf which they through into their cropped lands for good luck or prosperity in some way.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
