  1. Local Cures
    In olden times doctors were very few and the people had to seek remedies of their own. Those who were looked upon as having healing powers were called "quacks".
    For sprains or swellings chicken-weed was applied, dog-roots were supposed to stop bleeding and elder-berries were taken in a drink for heavy colds. If a lizard licked a burn it would cure it. The "fasting spit" was rubbed on boils.
    In the district of Hollywell, Kilrickle, Loughrea there was a holy well for the curing of sore eyes. A girl went from this district with a sore eye. When she had her "rounds" done, she was taking a drink and the pearl fell from her eye and she was completely cured. It was believed that if a person with yellow jaundice crawled between a white horse's legs that he would be cured. "Garlic" was taken for asthma. The seventh son was supposed to be a doctor and the seventh daughter a fortune teller. A posthumus child was supposed to have the power
