  1. This is my mother's own words. Collected by Patty Gavigan.
"When my mother was a little girl she lived with her parents and brothers and sisters about three miles from here. They had a farm and kept milch cows. One day a girl named Atcheson came to borrow the wheelbarrow and took it away when they were churning. They churned for the rest of that day and the day after and got no butter.
All the young people used to gather into the house at night. My uncle Charlie was telling an old woman about churning and getting no butter, and she said that someone had taken the good of the butter. She said the only way to get it back again was to find out who did it and to get a threepenny-bit and to cut her hand with it. One night when they were sitting round the fire he cut her hand with it. When they churned the next day the butter came all right.
