    should have been. On looking around he was horrified to find that the strange gentleman had hooves- cloven feet- it was the devil himself, that was in it. With beads of cold sweat pouring down his cheeks, and trembling hands, he fitted the shoe and when he had the job completed he was bordering a state of collapse. "What is your fee?" asked the cloven-footed stranger as he produced a handful of silver, "Nothing at all," said the trembling blacksmith, "It was only an obligement." His visitor insisted on paying, but the blacksmith was adamant in his refusal and eventually the farmer left the forge taking his horse with him. He mounted the horse outside the forge door, and the moment he did so, he disappeared as if the ground had opened up and swallowed him.
