- (continued from previous page)He walked on till he reached the house where the light was. He knocked at the door.
He met an old woman who was about two feet high. She asked him what he wanted, and Jack said he was looking for work. The old woman said "come in and stay until my son comes home". Jack went in and stayed until her son came. While he was waiting the woman boiled a big barrel of water. Then she emptied a two hundred bag of meat into the barrel Jack asked her what that was for. She told him it was for her son's supper. She said if he did not get all that he would eat all in the house.
At last Jack found some terrible noise; it was like a horse that was coming in, but it was the giant. He was about twelve feet high. When he came in he said where did that little runt come from. His mother said he came in to see if he would get work. The giant said "there are two barrels there at the door let you bring them down to the lake and bring up the full of them of water" Jack said "I would not be able to do that" "What are you able to do?" said the giant.
