- A short time before 1641 the first of the Sheridan Family came to Quilca. It was through the influence of the Rev Dean Bedell Protestant Bishop of Kilmore that the Sheridan's got this place.
They came from Kilcogy in the east of County Cavan, Richard Brinsley Sheridan was the great Irish dramatist politician and orator, he was born in Dublin in 1751 and died in London in 1816. He was grandson of the Rev Dr Sheridan of Crossdoney, Cavan, the friend of Dean Swift who wrote portion of Gulliver's Travels in the house in Quilca, where Richard Brinsley Sheridan resided for some time. His father was Dean Swift's biographer. On one occasion while the Rev Dean Swift was on a visit in Quilca with the Rev Thomas Sheridan and he had been persuaded by Mr Winslow or (Hounslow) of Fore to take a trip to Sleabh-na-Caillighe, after which he penned the following lines:-(continues on next page)
