    couple of reasons for this. First because it is in the winder time that he gets his oats threshed and has the straw. Secondly he has not much to do and he wouldn't have time to do it during the year afterwards. Around the rim of the thatch he puts a row of scollops. He comences thatching at the eve of the house. Those scollops are put there to keep the thatch tied down. Those are held down by smaller scollops bent in the middle like a hair pin and are hammered down both sides of the scollops by means of a dooden hammer called a mallet.
    Note: A good coat of thatch is known to last for fourteen years. Many house are thatched only once in ten years. As a general tale in the locality, all scollops are hidden when the work is finished. There are a few thatches, however who insist on having rows of sally rods, pinned down with scollops stretching along the eve and up the sides. Some up as far even, up to have parallel
