Born ---- BallyconigarThe 'Lydia' was a merchant vessel of 5000 tons out of the Mersey for Monte Video. She carried a general cargo. She ran ashore at Ballinamona about three miles north of Blackwater. Her cargo was completely salvaged though the ship became a total wreck. In a field nearby called the mill field auctions of cargo were carried on periodically for about six months.
Items of her cargo were cooking pots. These pots had very long legs, well over a foot and as a fire could be build under them being hung on a crook not necessary.
Some of these were in use in the locality until recently. They were known as 'Lydia' pots. Then there were in use 'Lydia' plates & Mrs. OByrne h.T. Blackwater tells me she has a few specimens of plates from the Lydia yet.
