   Oh! Billy won't you tell of of the days when you were young; You that stood and witnessed scenes of long ago; Won't you tell me how you battled for the freedom of our land, When the gallant Frenchmen landed in Mayo. 2 I will, my buachaill, tell you, tho' my memory is dim, Withered, old and feeble are my hands I will tell how how we raised the green banner long ago, And we battling for the freedom of our land. 3 The sun behinds old Leitrim's hills, in glory has gone down, The dew oe'r hill and mountain, falling fast, When like a flash of lightning burst the news upon our ears, That the French, the Gallant French, had come at last. 4 Lighted bonfires on ev'ry hill were glittering luridly, That cast a light on earth; shone many a pike and brand, When a score of stalwarth patriots, at midnight marched away For to battle for the freedom of our land.
